Canadian Federation of Humane Societies

Whether it be cats, dogs, fish, small animals or birds, companion animals play a huge role in our lives.

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is the only national organization representing humane societies and SPCAs in Canada.

We bring together those who work with and care for animals to promote respect and humane treatment toward all animals.

Since we were founded in 1957, we’ve earned our solid reputation and enviable credibility as the ‘go-to’ national voice on animal welfare issues for industry, media, government, non-governmental organizations, and the public.

We work collaboratively and cooperatively with key stakeholders based on the premise that we can have a greater impact creating positive change by being a part of the process instead of being apart from it.

No Puppy Mills Canada

Each year millions of Canadian companion animals are destroyed due to the greed of commercial puppy mills, the ignorance of back yard breeders and irresponsible pet owners. New laws, public awareness & compassion will end the suffering of the voiceless.

Due to the frequently poor breeding conditions in puppy mills, puppies bred there often suffer from health and/or social problems. Puppies raised in a cramped environment shared by many other dogs become poorly socialized to other dogs and to humans. Dogs are then transported over long distances in poor conditions, sometimes resulting in animal stress and death. As the surviving mill dogs grow older, they are more prone to developing respiratory ailments and pneumonia, as well as hereditary defects such as hip dysplasia.[7] In addition, mill dogs are more prone to have problems with their temperament due to lack of socialization, enrichment, and positive human contact. Puppies from mills are usually sold as purebred dogs in an attempt to attract the higher prices associated with purebreds. However, due to the indiscriminate breeding practices of puppy mills, the dog may not actually be a purebred puppy.[10] The vast majority of puppy mill animals are sold to pet stores by “dealers” or “brokers”. Some puppies are sold by dealers masquerading as authentic breeders.

No Puppy Mills Canada is here to help educate and help you make the right choice when looking to add a pet to your home.

Prisoners of Greed

Hundreds of thousands of dogs suffer in puppy mills in this country. The dogs are prisoners of greed. They are locked in small cages. They freeze in the winter and swelter in the summer. The dogs never get out of their prisons. They are bred over and over again until they die. The only way to free them from the misery of these horrid puppymills is to eliminate the demand for puppies by refusing to buy a puppy in a pet store and boycotting those pet stores that sell puppies. When people stop buying puppies in pet stores, the puppy mills will go out of business and the misery will end.

The state and federal governments do not enforce the laws to protect the dogs. The commercial breeders and brokers have huge well-funded lobbying efforts. Please join this fight to free the prisoners of greed. The only person who is going to make a difference for the dogs suffering in puppy mills is you. You, the people, can free them from their puppy mill prisons.
